KEY ELEMENTS IN INDUSTRIAL OFFICE DESIGN

In the realm of industrial office room design, furniture plays a central role as a key element that helps define the office aesthetic and provide its functionally. Beyond mere functionality, industrial office furniture possess a rugged elegance, celebrating simplicity and innovation.

In our continuing mission we unravel the principles guiding workplace furniture choices and attempt to illustrate how furniture contributes to the distinctive character and collaborative spirit of the workspace. We consider the essential facets of industrial furniture selection, where each element transforms the office environment into a harmonious blend of a timeless design.

Material Selection

In industrial look offices, furniture often showcases a harmonious blend of metal and wood. Metal elements, such as steel frames and accents, contribute to the utilitarian industrial office design concept look. Wood (often reclaimed), with its textured appearance, adds a sense of warmth and character to desks, tables, and shelving.

In essence industrial inspired furniture can be characterized by several typical features that reflect its utilitarian origins and raw original other era aesthetic. Key characteristics can include:

    1. Raw Materials:

Use of raw, natural materials like wood, metal, and stone or concrete.

Reclaimed, repurposed or previously used materials.

    2. Exposed Elements:

Visible assembly elements such as nuts, bolts, rivets, and welds.

Exposed construction frameworks and support structures.

    3. Simple, Functional Design:

         Emphasis on functionality and simplicity.

Clean, straightforward lines with minimal extraneous ornamentation.

    4. Sturdy and Durable:

Focus on robust and heavy-duty construction that looks built to last.

Often heavier than other types of furniture due to solid materials.

    5. Weathered and Aged Finishes:

Distressed, weathered, or aged finishes that give a vintage, worn look.

Patinas, rust, and imperfections are often admired features.

    6. Neutral Color Palette:

Natural Earth tones such as black, gray, brown.

Natural wood tones and unpainted (not unvarnished) metallics.

    7. Multi-Functional Pieces:

Furniture that serves multiple purposes or has adjustable features.

Examples include sit-stand tables or extendable tables.  Multiply purpose storage.

    8. Vintage and Repurposed Elements:

Incorporation of vintage or repurposed items like factory carts.

Use of old machinery parts as legs or bases.

Blends old industrial artifacts with new, functional designs.

    9. Minimalist Aesthetic:

A focus on essential elements without unnecessary – unrelated - decorations.

Often paired with minimalist interiors to highlight the furniture's design.

    10. Industrial Hardware:

Use of industrial hardware such as casters, pipes, gears, racks, etc.

Hardware often remains visible and is a key office industrial look.

Modular and Flexible Office Furniture

Flexibility is a cornerstone of a good office design plan. Furniture choices reflect this if they possess modularity. Desks and tables created with systems furniture are designed to be rearranged and reconfigured when adaptability is needed.  Multi-functional pieces, like a desk with integrated storage or convertible seating, maximize utility within a dynamic workspace.

Ergonomic Office Design

While industrial aesthetics are important, comfort should not be compromised. Industrial office furniture should incorporate common ergonomic principles to ensure that employees have supportive and comfortable workstations and ergonomic office seating. Office furniture options that allow for customization to accommodate individual preferences, when possible, is a plus.

No industrial office idea would be worthy of consideration if it didn’t include the flexible workspace achieved with adjustable height desks.

Check above for electric height adjustable desk options.

Industrial Office Desks and Tables

Desks and tables with an industrial look office typically feature simple and functional designs. Clean lines and sturdy construction, often with natural elements like wood, metal and stylized surfaces.

Office Seating Chair Choices

Industrial-style chairs with metal frames, exposed rivets, and leather or industrial-style upholstery are not uncommon according to the industrial inspired projects published in the April 2023 edition of architectural digest.

Office Lounge Seating, or Office Soft Seating, Office Lobby Seating, Office Task Chairs, Office Computer Chairs can all contribute to an overall industrial atmosphere.

Consider mixing different office furniture seating styles, like the combination of industrial chairs with more traditional or modern seating styles to add visual interest to the overall design. Neutral tones such as black, gray, brown with metallics elements is the color palette of the industrial age.

Office Storage Solutions

Industrial stylized office storage units often favor open shelving made of metal and/or wood. Integrated or stand-alone Office Storage Systems that are open provide a practical storage option and offer an open and airy feel. Utilitarian cabinets, constructed with natural materials accented with exposed nuts, bolts or rivets can equally contribute to the industrial aesthetic.

Collaborative Office Furniture

Communal spaces in this type of Office Setting can be furnished with large tables and structured seating arrangements. Seated or Standing Height Collaboration Tables with metal or wood bases and stylized – even Live Edge Wood Table Tops can nurture collaborative team interactions.

An Office Lounge Area consisting of seating options – take your pick from this Pinterest of Office Couch Ideas - situated in communal areas create relaxed spaces for informal meetings and brainstorming sessions. In these areas think Resimercial Office Design.

Conference Room Furniture

In Office Conference Rooms with an industrial look and feel look for larger robust tables with metallic bases and substantial tops. Ergonomic working chairs with metal and/or leather details can enhance the industrial theme, but don’t forget, a good looking themed chair that is not comfortable will never be a winner.

Reception and Lounge Areas

Office Reception Room Furniture constructed of repurposed metallic elements and/or aged distressed wood can make a strong visual statement. Comfortable lounge seating in reception and waiting areas, designed with an industrial flair can contribute to a welcoming atmosphere.

Office Design Tips

for your

Industrial Look Office

1. Define Functional Needs

Begin by clearly understanding the functional needs of the space. Consider the workflow, collaboration requirements, and the specific activities that will take place within the industrial look office.

2. Prioritize Ergonomics

Ensure that the office furniture and workspaces are ergonomic and comfortable. Aesthetically pleasing furniture should not compromise the well-being and productivity of employees.

3. Flexible Layouts

Design flexible and adaptable office layouts that can accommodate different work styles and adapt to changing needs. This is particularly important in dynamic office environments.

4. Storage Solutions

Integrate practical office storage solutions that are both functional and aesthetically aligned with the industrial themed office. Consider open shelving, filing cabinets, and multifunctional office furniture.

5. Technology Integration

Seamlessly integrate technology into the design. Consider cable management solutions to maintain a clean and organized look while ensuring easy access to power outlets and data ports.

6. Consider Acoustics

Address office acoustic options to create a comfortable working environment. Incorporate materials such as soft fabrics and acoustic panels to absorb some of the open office noise and reduce noise levels overall.

7. Lighting Design

Emphasis should be applied to creating a quality office lighting design that is aimed at providing lighting that not only enhances the industrial look but also provides sufficient illumination as required in different work setups.

8. Adaptability of Furniture

Choose office furniture used and new that can be easily adapted to different functions. For example, movable partitions or modular office furniture can transform a space based on evolving needs.

9. Employee Input

Try to involve employees in your office space planning process to gather insights into their daily activities and preferences. This can inform decisions that balance aesthetics with practical functionality and result in office layout design ideas that strike the right balance.

10. Durable Materials

Select options and materials that can withstand the demands of a busy office environment. This is especially important for high-traffic areas and frequently used furniture.  Think sustainability in office design, with an emphasis on eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient systems, and green building practices.

11. Safety Considerations

Prioritize safety considerations in the design. Ensure that the layout and materials chosen comply with safety regulations and create a secure working environment.  Don’t forget office density considerations.

12. Natural Elements

Incorporate natural elements, such as plants or outdoor views, to enhance well-being and create a more balanced and pleasant atmosphere. Think biophilic office design.

13. Iconic and Functional Features

Integrate iconic industrial features that not only contribute to the aesthetic but also serve a functional purpose. For example, specify meeting tables created using industrial artifacts or, if applicable include imagery that captures your historic buildings past purpose.

14. Brand Alignment

Ensure that your industrial office design ideas align with your brands identity and values of the organization. The aesthetic should resonate with the company's mission and culture.

15. Regular Evaluation

Regularly evaluate the functionality of your entire office space after design and planning implementation. Solicit feedback from employees and adjust as needed to optimize both aesthetics and functionality.

16. Local and Artisanal Touches

Incorporating local and artisanal elements into your office design concept can add authenticity and a sense of place. This could include locally sourced materials, craftsmanship, and regional design influences.

17. Hybrid Office Environments

Consider designs that support hybrid office space work models that can  provide a balance between in-person collaboration and remote work. This may involve creating flexible workstations and technology infrastructure that supports virtual collaboration.

18. Outdoor Workspaces

When possible, making outdoor space work-ready can provide employees with access to a refreshing alternative to interior office space.  When under sky options are not available office design ideas that blur the lines between indoor and outdoor space is a good strategy.

19. Spatial Dividers

Utilizing creative spatial office dividers and screens to delineate areas within open floor plans, providing privacy when needed while maintaining a sense of openness. We offer an array of office space dividers that are easily portable, and those best to be stationary, or those that are good for either.

20. Wellness and Employee Well-Being

Designing with a focus on employee well-being by incorporating wellness features such as ergonomic office furniture products, natural light optimization, and spaces that support mental health.

21. Personalization and Customization

A move towards more personalized and customized workspaces, allowing employees to have a greater degree of control over their work environments to enhance comfort and productivity.

By carefully considering the functional needs of the office space and making design decisions that prioritize both aesthetics and practicality, you can create an industrial office interior that not only looks appealing but also supports the efficiency and well-being of your office workforce.

Office SnapShots a purveyor of great office design photos lists in its database this noteworthy office design project by the Airbnb Environments Team in conjunction with WRNS Studio and IDF Studio for their Brannan Street office facilities in San Francisco’s design district.

Airbnb’s design mission is best capture in this – paraphrased – statement: At our core, we are an urban brand, and our offices are meant to be in cities. To provide variety and amenities while maintaining density, we embrace sharing economy concepts instead of the traditional model of individual ownership and mass redundancy.

Simply put, if we spend less time at our office desks for office, work, we’ll need fewer of them.  And that allows us to create a diverse range of office workspaces. The office environments initiative brings to life our "Belong Anywhere" philosophy, transforming how we utilize work and event spaces.

Industrial Office Spaces CASE STUDY
• Pixar Headquarters - Emeryville, California •

As the portal Office SnapShots explains, Pixar’s headquarters story started in 1999 with Steve Jobs as the company’s CEO. Jobs brought in Bohlin Cywinski Jackson  to grow his ideas for the Office Workspace.

Jobs’ biography reads that this place was envisioned to be one that “promoted encounters and unplanned collaborations.”. At the same time, Jobs aimed at creating a place that stood the test of time. Pixar’s facilities director, Tom Carlisle, explained that “He didn’t want a standard office-park building - one with corrugated-metal siding or ribbon windows. The building had to look good 100 years from now. That was his main criterion.”

After experiencing challenges with productivity in their cubicle layout open office floor plan at their previous headquarters, Pixar chose a more enclosed design for their new space. Many offices are organized into U-shaped clusters of 5-6 individual offices, centered around a common gathering area. This type of office layout fosters spontaneous collaboration on a smaller, more intimate scale, enhancing teamwork within workspaces.
